Christmas came REALLY early in 2023.

It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

Day 20: Fire Emblem Engage

Read our review here.

2023 has been a strange year, in that it has been incredible for games, overall, with amazing stuff being released every month, and yet the first major release of all is, arguably the finest game of 2024: Fire Emblem Engage. Yes, it was released this year. That’s how long this year has been.

Fire Emblem Engage Review 3

Fire Emblem Engage was a real gift (and that’s as close as I’m going to get to linking this explicitly to Christmas). Not only did the game feel like a return to vintage Fire Emblem after the relatively experimental and genre-bending Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but it was also a love letter to the history of the series, in that it found all kinds of great ways to bring back all our favourite heroes for one more adventure together. For long-term Fire Emblem fans, who have been waiting for Nintendo to do something about bringing Lyn back, the rush of nostalgia couldn’t be sweeter.
